Honest Thoughts: H&M Sucks

Hey Everyone! It’s time for another Honest Thoughts post since my last one about Caroline Stanbury being my favourite Bitch grabbed your attention. Now before any of you scowl and tell me that I’m being bitchy, hateful, negative etc towards H&M lovers, let me just say that I have a love and hate relationship with H&M. It’s true that I own items from the infamous clothing chain that I absolutely love, and I often frequent the local H&Ms in my area. But guess what H&M just like any store that has mass produced clothing, sucks. I’m not telling you to avoid H&M, that’s far from the truth, however I do want you to be smarter shoppers from time to time..it’s my new initiative as a Fashion Blogger for 2016.

I feel like there is a time and place for shopping and spending your money at H&M. In this post I’ve written when/what/where I find H&M to be worth your money, and the one item I can’t stand and will never understand why women continue buying them. Let’s get started !! 🙂

H&M Is Worth it for…

Shopping For Your Upcoming Vacation

I’m not sure if any of you do this but whenever I travel I want to have great photos and that translates to wanting to look good in what I’m wearing. But I also don’t want to spend a lot of money on clothing because 1) Your luggage can get lost in transit or items stolen from you.  2). You know when you carry around your makeup/hair products there is always a chance that those products will implode all over your clothing and then SURPRISE you find that your clothing is stained, and don’t even get me started on how to clean up the luggage nightmare waiting for you. And Number 3). H&M clothing can be sacrificed if in the event of air transit luggage disasters/common vacation wear and tear. You’ll never catch me bringing my most loved clothing on vacation. Don’t forget to sift through the sale racks!

Collaboration X

When you think of H&M you must be thinking about which designers will be pairing up with the Swedish clothing company next. To be honest I’ve never been able to grab any of H&M’s collaboration pieces. I’ve come close but decided against it in the end when it came to an Isabel Marant piece. Anyways, I think the collaboration pieces might be fun to own, but the line ups and mass frenzy I’ve seen turn me off from the entire process. If you’re one of the lucky ones to snag a piece outta another woman’s grasp well you’re the deserving victor and I hope you’re wearing that item out with pride.

I DO find collaborative pieces to be worth it if they are reasonably priced. There have been collaboration prices that I found to be outrageous i.e The Balmain X H&M dress priced at $649 is a prime example. I also don’t find dresses to be that great of an investment to begin with because they are that one item in your closet that realistically gets worn once, twice at best maybe?

Above: The Balmain X H&M  dress that isn’t worth it.

I grew up wearing real gold everything, believing costume jewelry to be ‘ewww’. No Lie I’d wear my gold watch with a diamond in it to highschool. Oh how things have changed now! I adore H&M for their accessories (rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings). I feel like the accessories aren’t overly priced and they can lend a little bit of edge to your style/ refresh your outfit. Now there are moments when you benefit the most from choosing to wear H&M accessories, like when you’re going out to drink, party or whatever… because if you loose an H&M piece, let me tell you it’s better to loose cheap jewels than the gold given to you by your parents, godmother, grandmothers and angry Italian aunts. H&M ACCESSORIES TOTALLY WORTH IT.

Simple rings that make a look..even better.

Trend Items

Yes trend items when they are on sale are definitely worth it from H&M if you’re a girl who needs to wear every new trending item. And this is perfect for highschoolers, your clothing gets trashed in highschool so easily. My kids ain’t ever going to wear good stuff to school, unless..it’s boarding school!

Shopping Smarter At H&M

Sometimes I don’t understand the hype surrounding H&M and why women will continue to shop there when there isn’t a sale. Items can vary in price i.e regular prices are in the  20, 30 and 40 dollar range. Now that doesn’t sound outrageously expensive, but if you take into consideration the quality of the item vs the price the expense is outrageous, and not to mention H&M is considered ‘Fast fashion’. Yes H&M does offer premium quality lines, and the conscious collection is intriguing- but if you look at the basics like sweaters, blouses, skirts, pants- sometimes it’s best to look elsewhere.  I’m the type of person who shops online, and I’m a HBC girl. I often get sweaters that were originally priced at $100 for $30 (and sometimes less). I’ve bought a pair of Lord & Taylor pants for $18 (reg $97), Vince Camuto wide pants for $47 (reg. &200) etc, these brands are better in quality than H&M. So can you see my issue? Can you see why H&M has those suck moments? And let’s not get started on their sale prices that’s when you see how much things decrease in price and yet the store is most likely still making a profit on that amount. Sorry H&M I’m just being honest about how you can suck, just like all you other fast fashion stores out there.

And….The One item I HATE from H&M

Last but not least there is one item I’ll always avoid purchasing from H&M, and I actually hate it. Oversized totes/handbags. These look so bad on anyone and everyone- the hardware, the quality, they are so stiff!! Sigh,  I don’t want to go on and on, but seriously H&M make these better or don’t make them at all.

Ps..H&M at Pacific Center Sucks, everything is picked over here!

  1. YES! 100% agree! I just don’t like fast fashion. Now H&M is better than Forever 21- if you look at the seam work in Forever 21 it’s veryyyyy poor. But I saw the collaborations of H&M and some are great. I have 2 pieces from them….one of them is a knockoff ….but they are so expensive for great fibres done in terrible conditions . I know Balmain collaboration did well, but it was funny – my fashion school peeps made fun of it….saying it wasn’t real Balmain . I am just not the biggest fan of fast fashion … It’s a waste

    1. Yes, I love your opinion on this..especially since you’ve had firsthand experience with working with textiles and fashion school. H&M is like the grown up version of Forever 21..lol
Yes, the Red Lanvin of yours is gorgeous..and so fun to wear!!
Hahah, wow lots of opinions in Fashion School! I just feel like when designers do these collaborations with H&M they are trying to fulfill our fantasy of owning something linked to a prestigious name..since not all of us can afford to spend/ or even justify spending so much on clothing! And i agree with you it is a waste at times !
when I was in Europe I met one of my friends female cousin and she absolutely hated H&M..complaining about it’s ‘mass production’.. she has a lot of interesting thoughts..hehe

Ps how is the moving process going for you?

      1. I do like H&M in some ways, they are trying to get better . They are getting into recycling textiles and are building factories with better working conditions. Fashion people , are into high authentic brands or brands you never heard about…there was a joke going around on Facebook a girl going to wear her hm dress to a club but it’s still cheap because it’s H&M balmain ….

My red dress was a knockoff ( a really well done knockoff – it had the label and everything) but now seeing actual knockoffs – girl…I will write about that .
Move to Europe is scary but it’s only for a year 😝how are you darling ?

  2. Great post! I love how you pointed out that if you are willing to do your research (which is so easy to do online) you can get fabulous items that last (like the Lord & Taylor piece) at cheap prices when they’re on sale elsewhere.
