Winter is slowly approaching Brrrrrrr, meaning this blog’s in need of a cold weather russian apparel feature with: Valenki (Valenok).
Brief History: These felt styled boots made of wool are a Russian creation, associated with traditional “rustic” dress made for walking on dry snow. Valenki reached their height in popularity towards the19th century when industrial manufacturing methods made them both affordable and easier for consumers to get their hands on..
Traditionally Valenki came in the colours of black, white, brown and gray, but now come available in different colours and styles. These felt styled boots may no longer be the popular choice of footwear for urbanite Russians, But when winter days are bitingly cold, Valenki paired with galoshes can’t be beat at keeping feet warm, cozy and most importantly dry. anddd yes!! I really want a pair of Valenki to walk around my home in…plus they make anyone look like a hot Babushka!
Below: Valenki and Galoshes, how to pair the two.
